In the months before the 2018 municipal election, CycleWR volunteers have been taking municipal electoral candidates for bike rides to show off the best and worst of the cycling infrastructure in their ward/city/region. Four of the REEP Green Solutions team, including staff and volunteers, went for a ride with Jan D’Ailly in July:
We had a great ride with Jan. Our route showed some of the things that we love about cycling in Kitchener (Filsinger Park, Iron Horse Trail, Community Trails) and some of the things that we find frustrating or dangerous (disappearing bike lane on Queen Street, dark tunnel under Westmount Road, “Community Trail” as the single name for a zillion trails that means you don’t know how to tell someone where to meet you, lack of cycling infrastructure on Victoria Street.)
Jan was open to hearing about all of it. Different REEPers took the lead at different times. We got busted on the Iron Horse Trail! Thought we’d check it out before it officially opened and found ourselves face to face with big rollers and digging machines that were coming down the path. Filsinger Park was a beautiful relief and peaceful moment in the ride. Then we braved Victoria and Queen with a little fun zip through Victoria Park in between. And finally, a glass of cold water at the REEP House to finish it off.
