Cycling infrastructure map

What’s in this map

The Region of Waterloo released a list of upcoming cycling-related infrastructure projects for 2019-2028 (pdf). The list does not say what type of infrastructure each road will have. We mapped the approximately 150 projects, including ones that do *not* have any cycling facilities. Then we added current infrastructure.

How to use the map

Toggle layers on and off in the sidebar (click the icon to the left of CycleWR at the top of the map) to see how things might change over the next five to ten years, and where the gaps will remain.

This map is a work in progress. There’s a lot of information and it’s constantly changing, but we’ll keep working on how to get it into the best possible format.

Notes:

  1. Data sets for Kitchener, Waterloo, and Regional trails/roads were accessed from the Kitchener Open Data site. Cambridge information was not available. Some of the sets overlap (ie. parts of the bike lanes along Westmount are in both the Waterloo & Region data sets, plus there’s a multi-use trail along one side, and it’s due for reconstruction in 2024).
  2. Any routes designated “shared use” by sharrows or signs were removed, as they do not meet criteria for “all ages and abilities” infrastructure.
  3. Some bike lanes might be missing, as the data sets could be out of date. Email us if you see any errors.
  4. Waterloo & Kitchener are both updating their master plans and re-working their lists of upcoming projects; we’ll update this map in the future as we’re made aware of other plans.
