Cycling into the Future, in cooperation with Cycle

Cycling into the Future, in cooperation with CycleWR, STSWR and ClimateActionWR is offering one or more cycling training sessions for students ages 5 and up.

These practical sessions will cover various components including:

* Tips for teaching how to ride for beginners
* Proper helmet fit
* Bike handling skills
* Hand signals and road signs
* Bike lane etiquette
* Parent session: how to coach kids while riding with them
* Simple bicycle maintenance
* Tips for riding in fall and winter

The sessions will be held in a parking lot with an optional on-road session for grades 4 and up. Parents must accompany their children, and all participants must practice social distancing with non-family participants.

We have about two months remaining to enjoy the temp bike lanes on Erb, Bridgeport, Westmount and Frederick. Get out and use them and tell your Regional Councillors your personal stories. We want to show that pedestrians and wheelchair and mobility device users feel safer *and* that most drivers don’t have concerns! Email RegionalCouncillors@regionofwaterloo.ca with your brief, positive messages.

We're getting to know people who are riding their bikes while they're #RidingOutThePandemic. Our latest #HumansWhoCycleWR story features zac.⁠

Tell us about your bike. How long have you been riding a bike? i have approx 10 bikes, each has a name and is very fun to ride. i have been riding for nearly 35 years.⁠
. ⁠
Where are you riding your bike? Has your experience of biking changed since the onset of the pandemic? i ride my bike any experience i get. i have been on the bike around the same amount of time in total, however have found it easier to plan my rides as there are less things occurring.⁠
. ⁠
How often have you been riding? Is this more or less than you expected? 3-5xs a week or 5-10 hours: around the same⁠
. ⁠
Tell us about your favorite ride this year. What made it so enjoyable? it was a combo; gravel, road, trail ride that i was able to complete with energy on a very hot day⁠
. ⁠
Have you ridden on the temporary bike lanes on Regional roads? How has that new infrastructure impacted your rides around the community? no, only heard other cycling friends speaking highly of them⁠
. ⁠
Have you had any challenges (pandemic related or otherwise) while biking? What have you learned along the way? only feel its harder to get biking related things done quickly since the market has been saturated with non gym memberships; however, i am content as i prefer more people riding ⁠
. ⁠
Bike sales and repairs have skyrocketed as people take up biking or return to it after many years. Do you have a message for folks who want to start riding their bikes (again)? ride your bike; do it - your bum will feel better in a few weeks of consistency ⁠
